The actions selected in August 2022 for railway infrastructure aim to maintain the 1,200 km of existing network; continue the construction of an additional 1,500 km of railway, in particular through the extension of the Douala-Ngaoundéré-Ndjamena network and the construction of railway infrastructure to support industrial projects. In addition, the European Union is providing €123 million in support for the modernization of the 330 km railway section between Bélabo and Ngaoundéré (PRBN). This project will contribute 30% of the total line in operation. The Douala-Yaoundé Express Train was put into service on April 26, 2021, a safer, faster (4 hours 45 minutes), more punctual and above all more pleasant train for passengers. Although this train occupies a limited place in intercity transport in Cameroon, the Yaoundé-Garoua line has a good occupancy rate and sustained activity. Camrail's plan to acquire new cars in the near future aims to place an Express Train in every city. Camrail is thus aiming to transport one million passengers per year.

Goods are transported by rail, also thanks to the Camrail company, which invests more than 18 million euros each year to modernize the railway and workshops, as well as to acquire equipment and rolling stock. In 2019 and 2021, more than 15 million euros were invested to expand the locomotive fleet with nine new General Electric models. In 2022, the company announced that it had committed to working with the State of Cameroon to rehabilitate 567 km of track over 6 years. The modernization of the Sitarail network will aim to streamline the border crossing of goods, improve traceability, and strengthen security.
Cameroon plans to build two new 300 km long railway lines through a public-private partnership. These are the Edéa-Kribi-Campo (184.5 km) and Douala-Limbe-Idénau (107 km) railway lines, for a total of 291.5 km. The Edéa-Kribi-Campo section will not only serve the deep-water port of Kribi but also boost trade with Equatorial Guinea, from the border town of Campo (Southern region). At the same time, the Douala-Limbe-Idénau line directly opens Cameroon's economic capital to Nigeria, a country with which intense trade has already developed from Idenau, in Cameroon's Southwest region.
