Universal health coverage, as well as the construction and rehabilitation of health facilities, received particular attention from the Cameroonian government in 2022. In its medium-term forecasts, annexed to the 2022 Finance Act, Cameroon plans to spend 620.67 billion CFA francs in the health sector over the period 2022-2024. For 2022 alone, the country plans to budget 203.23 billion CFA francs ($1 billion). These expenditures are phased in according to the guidelines of the National Development Strategy (NDS 30), Cameroon's new economic roadmap. There is also talk of modernizing the security and social protection system.
The government intends to definitively remove all the barriers that have delayed the rollout of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), namely the deficit and the state of health infrastructure. This three-year period therefore includes the construction, rehabilitation, and equipment of health facilities and on-call housing for health personnel.

The state also wants to build more hospitals and improve the technical capabilities of lower-level health facilities, not forgetting to equip district hospitals with medical imaging equipment.
Projects to build regional hospitals, undertaken as part of the Three-Year Emergency Plan for the Acceleration of Economic Growth (Planut), are well advanced. Garoua, the capital of the North region, will house Cameroon's third general hospital, after those in Yaoundé and Douala, founded in 1987 and 1992 respectively. The announcement of the creation of this health facility follows the inauguration of the Garoua Regional Hospital Center in May 2022.
More specifically, the authorities plan to improve the efficiency of the health system by taking advantage of decentralization; to establish Universal Health Coverage; to promote the development of a local pharmaceutical industry; to foster hospital performance and the quality approach in FOSA; to strengthen geographical accessibility to health care; to have qualified and motivated health personnel; and to improve health governance.
Following the cholera epidemic, Cameroon's Ministry of Public Health established a multidisciplinary team to provide free case management, raise awareness, disinfect households and communities, and purify water. In addition, a surveillance system was put on alert. Another scourge, in the face of the ever-increasing number of cases of yellow fever in Cameroon, has led the government to deploy a range of measures to stem the resurgence, including targeted vaccination campaigns.
Born in Douala, this Cameroonian-American virologist previously worked as the Director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2016 to 2022, as well as at the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Nkengasong was appointed WHO Special Envoy for Africa. An HIV virologist with over three decades of experience in the global HIV response, Dr. Nkengasong received international acclaim for his work on COVID-19 when he served as the founding Director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As the Global AIDS Coordinator, Dr. Nkengasong currently leads the United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
